Bicycle mechanics repair and maintain bicycles and related vehicles such as tricycles. They assess the bicycle, identify defects, replace or repair parts, and ensure the bicycle is in safe and working condition.

Required to work in this occupation
Repair bicycle tyres and tubes
Identify punctures and damage in bicycle tyres and inner tubes. Repair or replace them using appropriate tools and materials.
Maintain bicycle brake systems
Inspect, adjust and replace brake components including pads, cables, levers and callipers on rim and disc brake systems.
Adjust bicycle gearing systems
Set up, adjust and troubleshoot derailleur and hub gear systems to ensure smooth and reliable gear changes.
Clean and lubricate bicycle drivetrain
Clean chains, cassettes, chainrings and derailleurs. Apply correct lubricant to extend component life and ensure smooth operation.
Assess bicycle condition and damage
Inspect bicycles systematically to identify faults, wear and safety issues. Communicate findings clearly to customers.
Advise customers on bicycle maintenance
Provide clear guidance to customers on how to maintain their bicycle. Explain required repairs in plain language.
Use bicycle repair hand tools
Select and correctly use common bicycle repair tools including tyre levers, torque wrenches, chain tools and spoke keys.
Follow workshop safety procedures
Apply workplace health and safety rules including correct use of PPE, safe chemical storage, and maintaining a hazard-free workspace.

Install and adjust accessories such as lights, racks, mudguards, locks and child seats on bicycles.
True bicycle wheels
Adjust spoke tension to correct lateral and radial wheel wobble using a truing stand and spoke key.

Diagnose and service e-bike motors, batteries and electronic control systems.
